The fifth international Kaustinen Intangible Cultural Heritage Seminar Music on the Move – Migration, Resilience and Identity on 12 July will focus on the theme of migration, particularly from the perspective of safeguarding intangible cultural heritage. The seminar program handles the questions related to significance of music and musical heritage when people move from one place to another.
The seminar is part of the Kaustinen ICH Academy program and of the 57th Kaustinen Folk Music Festival, whose theme of the year is migration.
The floor is given especially to musicians who have personal and practical experience on the theme through personal history or projects related to migration and music. After keynote speech “Where Migration Studies Meet Living Heritage: Community Building among Ukrainian Refugees in Slovakia” by researcher Ľubica Voľanská, the professor of Sibelius Academy Saijaleena Rantanen takes us to panel discussion with the rap musician Karri ”Paleface” Miettinen who has recently worked in a project that studies Finnish-originated immigrant’s musical history in USA and Soviet Union, John Westmoreland, who has studied his American-Finnish forefather’s T-Bone Slim’s life and legacy, Mika “Miša” Saatsi of the Kaustinen Folk Music Festival Band of the Year Loimolan Voima, one of the leading torch-bearers of the current rise of Carelian culture and language, and Michal Elia Kamal of the multicultural, multinational and multiethnic band Light in Babylon from Istanbul. The joy of live music between the discussions are provided by the Ensemble Didgorifrom Georgia and the folk music pedagogy miracle Näppärit from Kaustinen, Finland.
