Promoted by the Ecomuseo Casilino ad Duas Lauros, in close collaboration with 5th Municipality of Rome, the Capitoline Superintendency, the Central Institute for Intangible Heritage, the Department of Social and Economic Sciences at La Sapienza University, and the Simbdea Association, the new body was formally established in March 2025 through a resolution of the Municipal Council and is now officially operational, positioning itself as a replicable model for other areas of the city.
The objective is clear: to give voice and space to the “living” heritage made up of knowledge, practices, rituals, artistic expressions, memories, and orally transmitted traditions—often invisible when compared to major monuments, yet central to the identity of local communities. According to the definition set out in the 2003 UNESCO Convention (ratified by Italy in 2022), this heritage represents the lifeblood of contemporary culture and intergenerational transmission.
Through this new tool, it will be possible to monitor communities and practices, study and catalogue them for the purposes of safeguarding and enhancement. But above all, it will serve as an open and productive space for dialogue, where the three pillars of the Ecomuseum—experts, communities, and institutions—can come together to define shared priorities, negotiate areas and living practices in which to invest resources (both economic and scientific), and strengthen ongoing efforts. For the first time, genuine co-design and co-programming in the cultural field will take place, while also developing a sector—intangible cultural heritage—that in the city of Rome has historically suffered from a lack of recognition, investment, and visibility.
We believe this initiative will also pave the way for Rome to strengthen its role as a European model in the study and promotion of intangible cultural heritage, giving voice and tangible recognition to the work of many heritage communities, in full alignment with the principles of the Faro Convention.
The hope is that this process can be replicated in other Municipalities, helping to position Rome at the forefront of the international landscape of intangible cultural heritage research and promotion.
