2025 Korea UNESCO-Accredited NGO Capacity-Building Workshop

The first NGO Workshop of 2025 was held in Andong. Organized by the International Mask Arts & Culture Organization (IMACO), the event was attended by the Korea Heritage Agency (KHA), The Center for Intangible Culture Studies (CICS), and the World Martial Arts Union (WoMAU).

During the workshop, participants viewed a performance of Hahoe Byeolsingut Talnori, an element inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This was followed by a session in which each NGO presented its activities and engaged in discussions on the operational direction of the “Korean UNESCO-Accredited NGOs Council.”

Participants then visited Hahoe Village, Byeongsan Seowon, Buyongdae Cliff, and the World Mask Museum, gaining firsthand insight into how Andong’s rich UNESCO-designated heritage is preserved and utilized in connection with the local community.

The Andong workshop reaffirmed the importance of solidarity and exchange among NGOs. It provided a foundation for contributing to the sustainable development of NGOs and the promotion of cultural diversity through participation in diverse UNESCO-related initiatives at both the national and international levels.

Through this meeting, the participating organizations strengthened mutual trust and explored practical means of cooperation toward shared objectives, recognizing the increasingly vital roles and responsibilities of NGOs in realizing the values of UNESCO. It is expected that such capacity-building workshops will continue to be held regularly, thereby expanding the engagement of Korean NGOs in global networks and promoting active civil society participation in the safeguarding and transmission of intangible cultural heritage.
